PATIENT INFORMATION SHEET ABOUT VACCINATIONS FOR FOREIGN TRAVEL

Bruntsfield Medical Practice offers a limited travel service, which is available under the terms and conditions of the NHS, which is sufficient for advice and protection for travelling within Europe, North America, Australia or New Zealand or single destinations in Africa, Asia and South America. Anyone travelling outwith Europe to more than one destination will require more specialised advice which can only be provided by the first six centres listed below. These services are provided at the following clinics on a private basis:

Travel Clinic, Western General Hospital, Crewe Road, Edinburgh 0131 537 2822
(9-12 noon)
Boroughloch Medical Centre, 1 Meadow Place, Edinburgh 0131 229 7529
Edinburgh Travel Health Clinic, 14 East Preston Street, Edinburgh 0131 667 1030
Adventure Tourism Travel Health Clinic, Leith Mount Surgery, 2 Lindsay Street, Edinburgh 0131 561 1945
The Edinburgh Clinic, 40 Colinton Road, Edinburgh 0131 447 2340
Masta Travel Clinic, Davidsons Mains Medical Centre, 5 Quality Street, Edinburgh 0330 100 4169
Marchmont Medical Practice, 10 Warrender Park Terrace, Edinburgh 0131 229 6314
Only the first six are able to undertake multiple travel vaccinations for multiple destinations.
All of the above centres are able to provide the YELLOW FEVER vaccination, but the Marchmont only as a single vaccination. Marchmont does not provide a full travel service for multiple destinations. A certificate is issued which is valid from ten days after the vaccination for a period of ten years.

YOU MUST ALLOW AT LEAST SIX WEEKS BEFORE YOUR DATE OF DEPARTURE FOR TRAVEL VACCINATIONS TO TAKE EFFECT. This will give time to work out a programme of protection and, more importantly, to complete your vaccination course before you travel.

Please inform Reception how many family members are travelling so an appropriate appointment time can be allocated with the Practice Nurse.

We would like you to complete a questionnaire for each family member prior to attending for your appointment and to bring it with you. Alternatively you will be asked to come 10 minutes earlier than your appointment time in order to complete the questionnaire.

Recommended immunisations vary according to the travel destination and the nature of your trip. Some vaccines are held in stock. Other vaccines may need to be obtained from your pharmacist and if necessary you will be given a private prescription for these.

Useful travel information, including vaccine recommendations can be found at www.fitfortravel.scot.nhs.uk

CHARGES:

The provision of prescriptions for some travel is outwith the service provided under the NHS. Under these circumstances the Practice Nurse recommending the prescription will ask you to pay the fee of £20 (Cash or cheque only) at reception prior to departure. In addition the Pharmacist will charge a private fee for medicines and vaccines on a private prescription.
